2001
Anti-Shark Finning Ad Campaign
ASIAN Geographic is AGAINST the consumption of shark fins. With an ad campaign by Leo Burnett, ASIAN Geographic received an award that has definitely amplified the awareness of the mindless slaughter of sharks.
2002
Genesis Award, Ark Trust
Our feature story ‘Bear Witness’ helped to highlight the animal rescue efforts of Jill Robinson in Sichuan, China. The Ark Trust, a US-based non-profit organization devoted to raising public awareness on animal protection issues, honoured ASIAN Geographic with the 2001 Genesis Award for chronicling the abuse of Asiatic black bears in China.
The Whale Shark Hunters
Since the rise in popularity of whale shark products for the Chinese, Hong Kong and Taiwanese market, ASIAN Geographic has supported the Whale Shark Project to increase the state of whale sharks – some issues explored were international trade measures, management measures, protection and conservation programmes and immediate plans to identify areas of ecological significance utilised by this species and put them in place.
2003
Nokia Does its Part
When corporations recognise more than the bottom line and share prices, they, too, recognise the value of sound environmental practices. In 2002, Nokia was at the forefront of this movement in Asia. ASIAN Geographic supported them with editorial works in the projects, including using ash from burned garbage for road building in Singapore and elephant reflectors that prevented any accidents to the elephants in India.
2004
FORD Grants at Work
As part of an on-going programme, Ford Motor Company awarded grants to
individuals and organisations that supportted conservation, environment within local communities. ASIAN Geographic provided editorial support for all winners’ projects – from Malaysia’s conservation camps for underprivileged children and Philippines' coral reef projects to restoring and conserving cultural values of traditional costumes in Southern Vietnam, among others.
SAFRA Photo Convention
ASIAN Geographic won the first prize in SAFRA's Photo Convention. We were proud to have a team of talented contributors, who dedicated their lives to the pursuit of the perfect story, photograph or solution.
2005
Leatherbacks in Crisis
ASIAN Geographic supported OceanNEnvironment and SOLO (The
Save Our Leatherback Operation) efforts in alleviating leatherback turtle eggs
destruction from loss of nesting habitat due to the decline of nesting females and the pressure from egg poachers.
One Small Step for Mickey, One Giant Leap for Sharks
OceanNEnvironment and ASIAN Geographic protested the serving of shark fin soup during weddings held at Disneyland Hong Kong. With other like-minded institutions and individuals banding together to achieve its objective, Disney finally removed shark fin soup from their wedding banquet menu.
Sustainable Fisheries, Sustainable Future
In an effort to amplify the campaign of sustainable fisheries, ASIAN Geographic provided editorial support for Project AWARE Foundation, the dive industry’s leading non-profit environmental organisation that creates awareness, responsibility and education of the aquatic world.
2006
Battling AIDS in Asia
With the AIDS epidemic spreading alarmingly in Asia, efforts to deal with the disease have been stepped up too, amidst many rising challenges. In 2005, some 8.3 million were living with HIV in Asia and so ASIAN Geographic was committed to provide a breakdown of AIDS victims, treatment availability and each country’s efforts of combating this human rights issue.
Wins ATTA 2006
ASIAN Geographic’s field editor Lester V. Ledesma photographed an elephant bathing in the river near the Pinnawela Elephant Reserve in Sri Lanka. This impressed the judges of the 2nd Asia Travel and Tourism Creative Awards (ATTA) and ASIAN Geographic was awarded the Silver Award for the Scenic Travel Photography category.
2008
Donor to Conservation Efforts
For the period of September to December, ASIAN Geographic donated a percentage of every new subscription received to TRAFFIC, a wildlife trade monitoring network that ensures trade in wild plants and animals is not a threat to their conservation efforts.
Asia’s Big 5 Campaign
ASIAN Geographic readers wrote in and voted for their favourite five critically endangered animals during our campaign where these iconic species became our feature story on why they were branded as Asian icons and what pushed them to the very edge of extinction.
Why we’re not serving shark fin soup
As part of our “Save the Sharks” campaign, ASIAN Geographic gave away limited edition cards that were displayed at weddings, explaining why shark fin soup was not served. These were placed at each table as a statement of the couples' conviction and to take the opportunity to spread the word.
2009
ASIAN Geographic Red Hand Campaign
ASIAN Geographic is gathering one million ‘red hands’ – the symbol of the global campaign against the use of child soldiers. Readers can write their personal message of protest until 1 February 2010, where we will present them to UN officials in New York on 12 February 2010, the anniversary of the treaty banning the use of child soldiers.

From our humble beginning in 1999, we have grown from strength to strength to become the region’s leading geographical magazine. We were proud to be the winner for best visual series and photography and placed third for best cover and feature story by Magazine Publishers Association of Singapore (MPAS) 2009.
