John Hardy and His Green School

A maverick that moved from the world of fashion & luxury design to build a holistic education for children in a sustainable environment and started the first bamboo-building company in Bali.

“Curriculum at the mental level (maths, science, etc) is important but learning is only best when combined with the heart level – (loving, embracing, protecting what’s around us)”
– John Hardy

Once a Bali-based jewelry designer, his intricate handmade jewelry was always inspired by the idea of “sustainable luxury”.

Today, John is an environmentalist and advocate of the use of bamboo as an alternative to timber for building. That’s not all. In 2007, John and his wife, Cynthia, started a school called Green School in Ubud, Bali, where almost everything is made of bamboo!

The unique thing about Green School is the holistic education to children in a sustainable environment and the effort to be a low carbon footprint school.

“Curriculum at the mental level (maths, science, etc) is important but learning is only best when combine with the heart level (loving, embracing, protecting what’s around us” Hardy explains.

There are 21 qualified teachers who are passionate about equipping children with skills needed to face the challenges of the future.

For example, the study of the rice cycle, which in theory requires little mathematics and science. Children learn this in class and practice in the field – making organic rice on their own and, most importantly, understanding the value of these essentials in our lives.

Green School students come from different parts of the world: some arrive with their parents as they relocate while others simply choose to attend this school.

Currently, John is in the midst of starting a sustainable bamboo building company in Bali, called PT Bamboo.
