Animal rights activist, Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) held an awareness campaign during the World Animal Day weekend from 2 to 4 October at Plaza Singapura, Singapore.

Louis Ng, Executive Director of ACRES told the public: “This campaign is necessary as the numbers for sharks are critical and we should all take a stand before this animal is pushed towards extinction.”

For just two dollars, the public was encouraged to break a soup bowl and make a pledge to save the sharks. The broken pieces of the bowl were then placed onto a 15metre shark mosaic canvas and will be exhibited across the island to continue raising awareness on the plight of sharks.

With an overwhelming response from the public, thousands of people making the pledge to save sharks and stop eating shark fin, it was certainly great news for ACRES as they have managed to raise over SGD8,000 for their future projects.

“I made a stand by not eating shark fin and I must add the breaking of bowls is very therapeutic,” says Indonesian photographer Riahardy Mendrofa, who happens to be in Singapore for a holiday.

ASIAN Geographic Magazines, which has been a strong advocate against the consumption of Shark Fin over the last decade, has joined ACRES’ efforts at this event to increase the awareness of this very urgent cause.

Asian Diver and ASIAN Geographic JUNIOR editor, Sol Foo, gave an educational talk on the importance of sharks in our ecosystem and the unseen dangers of the consuming shark fin.

She explains, “there is to be a collective effort to change the mindset of people. By not consuming, we are also inadvertently saving ourselves from the destruction of the ecosystem”.

While shark fin is a status symbol when served at most Chinese wedding banquets and dinners, ASIAN Geographic Society, the non-profit arm of ASIAN Geographic Magazines also gave its Anti-Shark Fin wedding cards for brides and grooms to-be, to make a stand at their wedding and underline the reasons why they choose not to serve this ‘luxurious’ dish.
